    Unpaid Carers

    What help is available?

We will be running fully funded (FREE to you) Breath, Body, Mind courses from community venues in and around York. These courses will help you to build resilience, feel calmer and less worried.

    What is Breath, Body, Mind?

Breath, Body, Mind is a six week course, where we will provide simple breath exercises with movement to help your body and mind relax. You can even do them sitting down if you need to!

One special breathing exercise that you will learn (called ‘coherent breathing’),
has been shown to help people stay calm, especially when things feel stressful.

If you want to know more about Breath, Body, Mind
or are interested in the service for yourself click here.

Previous Breath, Body, Mind Pilot Project

We ran a successful pilot project delivering Breath, Body, Mind courses to unpaid carers in York from February to June 2024. This was funded by York Belfrey’s Social Action Grant Programme. The courses were delivered face to face and online in small groups.

Carers said the courses helped them in the following ways:

    • “It has taught me how helpful being aware of breathing can be in stressful situations”.
    • “There is so much stress due to serious health issues in the house that by taking time away and learning how to relax and become calm really helped back home”.
    • “Relieve stress. Improve mood, patience and fears. Help with sleep and relaxation”.

    People Living With Dementia

    What support is available?

We are providing fully funded (FREE to you) one to one sessions of Cognitive Rehabilitation in your own home, to help you or the person you support to function better, build confidence and live well.

    What is Cognitive Rehabilitation?

Difficuties with memory, planning, concentration or other aspects of thinking can make it hard to carry out everyday activities, and enjoy life to the full. Cognitive Rehabilitation aims to enable people with these kinds of difficulties to manage everyday life and everyday activities better.

This can help to reduce stress levels and improve confidence and well-being. It can also help to reduce the demands on family members or other people who may be providing support.

It uses proven methods to help you get better at the things you want to improve in your daily life.

If you want to know more about Cognitive Rehabilitation or are interested in the service for yourself or someone you know click here.

Our Previous Cognitive Rehabilitation Pilot Project

In 2023-24 we ran a pilot project of Cognitive Rehabilitation in and around York, which had positive results for the 18 people with dementia who took part. The pilot project was also funded by the National Lottery Community Fund.

Here are a couple of quotes from the participants about their experience of the pilot project:

    • “Definitely helpful. Makes me do things to keep it in my memory as well” (Sheila: Person with Dementia)
    • “Initially it was difficult for Mike to be motivated, but that has increased dramatically over the course of the 8 weeks” (Lynne: Family Care Partner)
    • “Making it simple been helpful” (David: Person with Dementia)
