Our Values

Our aim as an organisation is to support unpaid carers and people affected by dementia in the York area to empower themselves and improve their lives.

George Rook describes Empowerment:
“Empowerment means people having power and control over their own lives. People get the support they need that is right for them… You can’t empower someone else or make someone empowered. It is about ways of working and supporting someone that means they can take control and responsibility for their own lives”.

These are the words that drive us – this is our culture!

Empowerment

We are committed to supporting unpaid carers and people affected by dementia to take control of their own lives.

Our aim is to provide the right kind of support, that helps individuals build independence, make their own choices, and feel confident in managing their personal challenges.

We believe true empowerment comes from within, and focus on working in ways that enable people to feel capable, and in charge.

“I’ve never used a computer before. You’ve done a wonderful thing”
(Rosemary: Person with Dementia).

Partnership and Belonging

Our services are designed to feel like a supportive family, where everyone is known, respected, and included.

This approach helps create environments where people feel comfortable, cared for, and able to build genuine relationships.

“We’re a small group of people who work well together”
(Brian, group member at Beetle Bank Social Farm).

Emotional Wellbeing and Resilience for Unpaid Carers

Caring for someone can bring both joys and challenges.
We prioritise emotional wellbeing, by offering practical support to help unpaid carers to manage stress, anxiety, and difficult emotions.

Through activities like breathing exercises, we aim to strengthen resilience and promote calm and balance.

“A wonderful holistic experience that let me reflect on my self-care, as a carer and transform the way I deal with stressful and unsettling situations” (Unpaid Carer).

Active Engagement and Participation for People Living with Dementia

We encourage people to stay active and involved in the things that matter most to them. Whether it’s continuing hobbies, contributing to group activities, or staying connected to their communities. We help people remain engaged in ways that are meaningful and achievable.

Our services are designed to help people keep doing what they enjoy and to foster a sense of purpose and contribution.

“Initially it was difficult for Mike to be motivated, but that has increased dramatically over the course of the 8 weeks” (Lynne: Family Care Partner about our Cognitive Rehabilitation service)

Social Connection and Enjoyment

We recognise the vital role that socialising and having fun play in maintaining wellbeing. Many people experience social isolation, and we work to combat this by keeping social life at the centre of our services.

We aim to make every session both meaningful and enjoyable, helping people reconnect, make new friends, and share positive experiences.

“It’s fun, isn’t it” (Rosemary: Person with Dementia)

Quality and Choice in Services

We are dedicated to improving both the quality and variety of services available to unpaid carers and to people affected by dementia. Our focus is on ensuring that services are person-centred, flexible, and meet the diverse and changing needs of those who use them.

We strive to enhance quality of life by offering high-quality, responsive support that makes a real difference

“The breathing is really important really. Breathing is helpful and constructive” (Breath, Body, Mind service user).
