Breath, Body, Mind Pilot Project 2024

In 2024 we were given £2k by Belfrey’s Social Action Grant Programme to test out our Breath, Body, Mind courses and see if they were helpful to unpaid carers in the York area. We partnered with the York Carers Centre and supported 21 unpaid carers.

Recap: what is Breath, Body and Mind?

Our Breath, Body, Mind courses are for small groups of unpaid carers. Breath, Body, Mind are gentle practises to safely alleviate stress and anxiety. During the sessions you learn simple movements with breathing to help reduce tension and stress in the mind and body.

What happened in our Breath, Body, Mind pilot project?

  • We delivered 4 courses to 21 unpaid carers. The courses were delivered over 4 sessions (1 per week). Each session lasted 3 hours.
  • Three courses were run from community venues in York. We also ran an online course for carers who couldn’t make the in person groups.

What participants have said about our Breath, Body, Mind courses

  • “A wonderful holistic experience that let me reflect on my self care, as a carer and transform the way I deal with stressful and unsettling situations”.
  • “It was extremely beneficial to me”
  • “Helped me with ways of coping in very stressful situations”
  • “Having attended the course and learned about breath, body, mind it slowly becomes a natural exercise to do at home”
  • “By focusing your mind on your breathing, it calms and de-stresses”
  • “Certainly felt better and had an awareness of how the body felt different and better from taking part”

Next Steps

This project helped us to know that our Breath, Body, Mind courses are helpful to unpaid carers and to continue this work. We now have funding to deliver a regular Breath, Body, Mind service to unpaid carers like you until 2028 (for FREE).
